Forward Planning and Budgeting for GRACE

GRACE Controller, Melissa Wolcanski

As we settle into the winter months, we look ahead to the next school year and planning. Details like next year’s academic calendar and just as important, when spring break will be, need to be determined well in advance of the actual dates. One such detail that takes significant planning is next year’s budget. There are so many factors that go into the GRACE budget, some we can control, others we can only estimate. The two items we spend a considerable amount of time on each year are tuition rates and employee compensation.

I can assure you there is so much more that goes into determining tuition rates than just an arbitrary percentage increase. The GRACE Finance Committee analyzes tuition and regularly discusses various options to ensure affordable tuition for our families. These past several years have been challenging in so many ways for our families as everyday necessities like food and gas have increased at a higher rate than cost of living increases. We are very sensitive to the fact that increases in tuition can become a barrier for middle class families as they experience financial struggles in the current economy. Over the last several years, we have implemented annual increases in tuition of 4% and last year we made an inflationary increase of 6%. For the 2024-2025 school year we are committing to increasing tuition only 2.5% and it is our hope that we can target the same 2.5% increase for the 2025-2026 school year. It is our commitment that the cost of Catholic education is not a barrier to families who desire Catholic education for their children. We have many resources to help make Catholic education affordable so please take a look at the “Navigating Tuition Affordability” section of this newsletter. We would also like to hear from you any ideas you may have to ensure the cost of tuition is not a barrier for your family.

Regarding compensation, GRACE has completed a compensation study which has enabled us to better understand where we have some gaps, but also where we are doing well. We have implemented the first phase of our compensation plan and will continue to strategically elevate compensation with resources available as we are committed to this initiative as outlined in our GRACE Strategic Plan. In addition to providing fair wages, we have a solid benefits package with affordable health insurance, a competitive retirement contribution, employee tuition discounts, YMCA reduced membership fees, and discounted childcare for employees with children in our GRACE Little Saints program, to name a few. Added to the monetary benefits are the benefits of working in faith filled, safe schools with engaged family and church communities.

GRACE is blessed to be in a fiscally healthy state more than 10 years after being formed. We have accomplished this through the responsible use of funds as well as thoughtful stewardship of revenue opportunities. Since GRACE was formed we have been able to shift our revenue structure from being heavily reliant on parish support to diversifying into the Choice program and increasing development revenue through the annual appeal, grants and stewardship of generous donors committed to Catholic education. This has enabled us to open our doors to more students, decrease our reliance on parish support and site fundraising while also increasing the amount of funds available for compensation, technology, facility upgrades and rent. We have also been able to invest in staff development and educational resources to ensure we are providing high quality education for all of our students. Over the years we have centralized resources, increased buying power and implemented strategic planning and execution. We will continue to evaluate our long term goals and look for ways to provide fiscal stability for the long term health of our system, providing Catholic education for generations to come.

Dana Vance spotlight

St. John the Baptist Catholic School Principal Spotlight

We are so blessed by dedicated and talented leaders such as Ms. Vance! Join us in thanking her for her commitment to Catholic Education!

Let’s learn a little bit about Principal Vance:

Q: Ms. Vance, why do you choose to work for GRACE/St. John the Baptist School?

A: I believe in the mission of GRACE! I enjoy helping our students to become who God made them to be and I am thankful for the opportunity to support the education of the whole child! It is truly a blessing! That’s the beauty of Catholic schools, we are allowed and encouraged to care about all of the pieces, not just the academic ones.

Q: What are some fun facts about you?

A: I didn’t learn to swim until I was in my 40s! And, even though I am from Chicago and lived down the block from Wrigley Field, I have never gone to a Cubs game! (Or a Bears game!)

GRACE Basketball Season Finale

The seasons of six GRACE girls and boys basketball teams culminated in a trip to St. Norbert College on Friday, January 19. The nearly three-month seasons, filled with ups and downs, fun, and lasting memories, saw their finales played on a collegiate court. The opportunity to be announced before the game and to play on the home court of the Green Knights created a memorable experience.

Special thanks needs to be given to St. Norbert College Athletics staff for hosting and providing a concessions stand, the League Director Ryan & each school’s Athletic Directors for all their time & effort planning, and the coaches & volunteers who gave their time and talents on Friday.

GRACE Athletics has the unique opportunity to play sporting events at St. Norbert College through the CatholicLink partnership. Collaborations with the college offer many invaluable experiences for GRACE students and more opportunities like this will be made available in the future.

HFCS Sister and students

Holy Family Catholic School’s Deacon Dan and Sister Elena

Holy Family Catholic School is honored and blessed to include one Religious Sister and one Deacon. Sister Elena, a member of the Manitowoc-based Franciscan Sisters of Christian Charity, is currently teaching the third grade. Deacon Dan Gray, ordained by Bishop Ricken in 2020, teaches middle school religion classes. They both serve on the Faith Committee and collaborate to look at options for spirituality in the school.

Having been a religious Sister since 2007, Sister Elena has taught in a number of Catholic schools in Wisconsin, Hawaii, Arizona and Mississippi before coming to Green Bay. Her insights into teaching are meaningful.

She says, “Teaching means to share God’s wealth of graces, truths, and love with His children. My students are a fun class to teach. Teaching isn’t solely about the teacher teaching students; it is also about the teacher learning from the students. They have taught me a ton of God’s joy. Each day while teaching I enjoy meeting God in the children. God is truly among us with each other. I begin every day with religion class because it’s a great way to begin the day with God and then throughout the day we can associate our faith with something else we learned that day. Plus, I enjoy that Catholic schools are wonderful safe places that foster reverence for God and respect for others. I totally enjoy sharing with the students a higher education of God and academics. It is wonderful to see students become independent and responsible while completing tasks that were once challenging.”

Outside of her school commitment, Sister Elena loves to pray in nature, go for walks in neighborhoods or on trails, visit state or national parks, take photographs, create watercolor paintings, visit the elderly, and watch football games. Sister enjoys cooking meals and baking for the Sisters that she lives with in St. Agnes Convent.

She quips, “But most of all I love to grill!” She also hosts the Franciscan Moment Podcast for the Franciscan Sisters of Christian Charity.

Deacon Dan Gray brings a wide range of experiences to his current calling. Having spent much of his adult life as a respiratory therapist, upon that retirement, he decided to become a substitute teacher with GRACE. He now spends part of his week teaching religion as well as serving two area parishes as their deacon.

Regarding being a teacher, Deacon Dan shares, “I love teaching. I am grateful for the opportunity to be with these kids and to be part of their faith journeys. I want to encourage them to think about and understand their faith so that it becomes a part of who they are at every moment in time. Every day and every class begins with prayer. I especially enjoy the energy of middle schoolers. Watching them grow and mature over the past years has been fun.”

HFCS humbly acknowledges the service and contributions that these two gifted educators are making to the school community and also thanks them indeed for their dedication.
